AEO glossary

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of making a website easy for AI answer engines to read, understand, quote and cite.

Technical explanation

AEO covers the technical layer (crawler access, rendering, structured data), the semantic layer (entities, clear claims, attribution) and the content layer (direct answers, factual density, freshness). Unlike classic ranking work, the target is inclusion in a generated answer rather than a position in a list of ten blue links.

Example

A pricing page that states the price in plain text, marks it up with valid structured data and allows GPTBot in robots.txt is far more quotable than one that renders the price only after a user interaction.

How it differs

SEO optimises for ranking in a results page; AEO optimises for being used inside a generated answer. The two overlap but are measured differently.
